Petertide Ordinations

In the coming week there will be Petertide ordinations in Armagh, Dublin, Belfast, Downpatrick and Kilmore.

Today (Saturday) the Archbishop of Armagh will ordain to the diaconate Hilary Dungan, David Luckman and Alan Millar. Tomorrow (Sunday) the Archbishop of Dublin will ordain three deacons, Avril Bennett, Patrick Comerford and Timothy Close, and one priest, the Revd Roy Byrne, in Christ Church Cathedral where the preacher will be the Archdeacon of Dublin, the Ven. Gordon Linney. This is the second year in which the Diocese of Dublin has experimented with the innovation of ordaining deacons and priests at the same service.

Elsewhere the ordinations are all to the priesthood. The Bishop of Kilmore will ordain the Revd Noel Regan, while the Bishop of Down and Dromore will ordain the Revd Craig McCauley, Revd Andrew McCroskery, Revd William Press and Revd Marie Walshe at a service in Down Cathedral where the preacher will be Canon Michael Burrows. In St Peter's Church, Belfast, where the preacher will be the Rt Revd Martin Lind, Bishop of Linkoping, Sweden, the Bishop of Connor will raise to the priesthood the Revd Ronald Elsdon, Revd Elizabeth Henderson, Revd Paul Jack and Revd Terence Kerr.

The ordinations in Belfast are also a part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of St Peter's Church which was consecrated on 29 June 1900. Tomorrow (Sunday) the Bishop of Meath and Kildare, Dr Richard Clarke, will preach at the Sung Eucharist while on Thursday, St Peter's Day, the Bishop of Connor will preside at Festival Evensong at which the preacher will be the Revd J.R.B. McDonald who was ordained a curate for the parish in June 1941. St Peter's church, where the rector is the Revd Charles McCollum, is situated on the Antrim Road. It is built in the Gothic style using Scrabo sandstone, and the parish has a fine tradition of choral music.

Tomorrow (Sunday) the Dioceses of Cashel and Ossory will gather in the Waterford Institute of Technology for a Celebration of Faith while in Co. Meath the preacher at the annual Open Air Service on the Hill of Tara will be the Rector of Navan, the Revd John Clarke. In St Patrick's Church, Monaghan, a thirty-one strong team from the Diocese of Clogher will be commissioned for a visit to Kenya next month. In Dublin the Irish Guards will celebrate the centenary of the regiment at Matins in St Patrick's Cathedral. The hymns will be accompanied by the regimental band and the preacher will be a son of the Church of Ireland, Canon Gerry Murphy, who served as an army chaplain for twenty two years. In Christ Church Cathedral the Annual Parade Service of the St John's Ambulance Brigade will take place at the Sung Eucharist when the preacher will be the Revd Anne Taylor, curate of Rathfarnham. Traditionally this service is held on the Sunday nearest to the feast of their patron, St John the Baptist.

On Tuesday the Church of Ireland Broadcasting Committee will visit the studios of Lyric FM in Limerick, while in Kinsale the Pro Musica Choir from Dalarna in Sweden will give a recital in St Multose' church with the proceeds going to the Tower Restoration Fund. On Wednesday the Chaplain of Trinity College, Dr Alan McCormack and the Chapel Choir leave for a tour of New York.

The Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, the Rt Revd John Neill, has appointed the Revd Philip Heak as Diocesan Youth Officer for the united dioceses of Cashel and Ossory. Mr Heak, who is presently curate assistant in Galway, will take up his new post in October.
