Ordination of Priests

The season of ordinations begins on Thursday, which is Ascension Day, when six deacons will be raised to the priesthood.

In St Fin Barre's Cathedral the Bishop of Cork, the Rt Revd Paul Colton, will ordain the Revd Daniel Nuzum, curate in the Bandon union of parishes, and the Revd Peter Massey who is serving in Fermoy as a member of the auxiliary ministry. In Cashel the Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, the Rt Revd John Neill, will ordain two deacons in the Cathedral of St John the Baptist. The Revd Derek Sargeant is a curate in the Waterford Cathedral group of parishes and the Revd Ian Coulter is an auxiliary curate in the Kilkenny group of parishes. The Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Dr James Mehaffey will ordain the Revd Garth Bunting, curate in Clooney, and the Revd Kenyon Homfray, curate in Convoy.

Today (Saturday) the Church's Ministry of Healing will hold a Millennium Healing Conference in Belfast where the speakers will be the Bishop of Tuam, Dr Richard Henderson, and Canon Ian Ainsworth Smith, Chaplain of St George's Hospital, London, and a well known writer on pastoralia. The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Walton Empey, will preach at the Dublin and Glendalough GFS Festival Service in Donoughmore, Co. Wicklow, while in Co. Donegal the Meath Diocesan Choir will give a concert in Holy Trinity Church, Carrigart.

Tomorrow (Sunday) morning, in the University Concert Hall, Limerick, the Bishop of Limerick and Killaloe, the Rt Revd Edward Darling, will celebrate a Companions in Jubilee Eucharist at which the proceeds of a millennium jubilee appeal will be dedicated. The proceeds of the appeal are to support the work of two hospitals and two schools in Malawi.

RTE will televise a Service of the Word with the congregation of Kill o' the Grange parish, Dublin, where the rector is the Revd Ferran Glenfield, while in St Catherine and St James' Church, Dublin, the Rogationtide preacher will be the Bishop of Tuam. In Rathdowney, Co. Laois, the Bishop of Cashel and Ossory will preside at a service to mark the 50th anniversary of the Mothers' Union, while in Co. Donegal the Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, will preach at an open air service in Churchtown to mark the fourteenth century of the death of St Baithin, a cousin and companion of St Columba.

On Sunday evening in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, there will be a concert to mark the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Diocese of Christchurch, New Zealand, in which the then Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Richard Whateley, was involved. The focus of the concert will be a performance of music which was written for the occasion by the English composer, Francis Grier, entitled Around the Rim of the World.

On Wednesday evening the Odin Choir from Gothenburg will give a recital in St Patrick's Church, Greystones, while in Kill o' the Grange Church the Robert E. Lee High School Chorale from Texas will give a recital in aid of the roof fund. In Cashel Cathedral there will be a concert by the Albany Chamber Singers from New York in aid of the Bolton Library, situated beside the cathedral, which is one of the most important collections of books in the custody of the Church of Ireland.

On Friday "Powerscourt 2000", a festival conference weekend, under the auspices of CORE (City Outreach through Renewal and Evangelism) will begin at Powerscourt House, Co. Wicklow, and continue until the following Monday. The emphasis will be on worship and teaching and it is anticipated that some 800 adults and children will participate.
