Braemor Institute Courses
No sooner has the academic year ended than preparation for the new
one begins. Applications are now invited for two courses next October in
the Braemor Institute which, under the direction of the Revd Tom Gordon,
provides extra-mural study programmes.
The Certificate in Pastoral Studies is a very popular two year course
which runs on Thursday evenings with three Saturday study days in each
year. The course is open to all who wish to deepen their understanding
of some of the key issues in today's church and society. Among the
topics covered are bereavement, addiction, sexuality, HIV/AIDS,
depression, education, worship and spirituality. There are no
examinations and all are welcome.
The RSA Certificate for Youth Workers is an inter-denominational one
year course which is part-time and part-residential. The programme
combines theory, skills and on-site placements and the certificate is a
recognised qualification indicating a high level of competence in youth
work. The course covers the developmental needs of young people,
programme planning, communication and evaluation. Participants are
supervised in placements and the seminars are given by fully qualified
and experienced tutors. Details of these courses may be had from the
Director, The Braemor Institute, Church of Ireland Theological College,
Braemor Park, Dublin 14. Telephone 01-4923695; fax 01-4923082; e-mail Tom Gordon.
Today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday), being the weekend of the
Drumcree parade, a Vigil of
Prayer will continue in St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast. Officiants at
the vigil will come from across the community.
This evening (Saturday) the San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble from
California will give a recital in Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford,
where their programme will include Gregorian chant and music by
Victoria, Montiverdi and Rossini.
Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon the annual Farahy Address in memory of
the novelist Elizabeth Bowen, will be given in St Colman's Church,
Farahy, near Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. The speaker will be Dr Hermione
Lee, Goldsmith Professor of English Literature in the University of
Oxford.
In Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, the final concert in the Sundays
at Seventeen series will be given by Christ Church Baroque. The
programme of works by Bach and Handel will begin at 5.00 p.m..
In Clonmacnoise there will be a celebration of the Eucharist in
Templeconnor Church at 4.00 p.m.
The Church's Ministry of
Healing will hold its annual Thanksgiving and Gift Day on Wednesday
in the Dublin Central Mission, Lower Abbey Street where the preacher
will be the Rector of Wicklow, Canon John Clarke.
In Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin Evensong will be sung by the Choir
of Downing College, Cambridge.
The Cashel Cultural Festival will be officially opened on Thursday. A
part of the programme will be a Flower Festival in the Cathedral of St
John the Baptist where there will be a Flower Festival Recital by the
Cashel Brass Band on Thursday at 7.30 p.m. The Flower Festival, which
has been organised by the Dean of Cashel, Dr Philip Knowles, will be a
fund raiser for the Bolton Library which is situated in the grounds of
Cashel Cathedral. The Library is a splendid collection of early printed
books and manuscripts which was largely assembled by Theophilus Bolton
who was Archbishop of Cashel from 1730 until his death in 1744. The
building was restored by the late Dean Woodworth and many of its
treasures are on permanent exhibition. Under the chairmanship of Mr
George Cunningham, a new Board of Management is seeking to secure the
future of the Library financially and to develop, in association with
the University of Limerick, its academic and intellectual potential.
