St George's Bells to Ring Again

An appeal has been launched to finance the re-hanging of the famous bells from St George's Church, Temple Street, in Christ Church, Taney, Dundrum. Styled as a "Millennium Opportunity" the appeal seeks to raise £64,000 which is needed for structural work inside the Christ Church tower, for the construction of a hanging chamber, and for a sound proofing system to ensure silent practice.

The peal of eight bells was cast in London in 1825 for Francis Johnston, the eminent Dublin architect who designed the General Post Office. Johnston presented the bells to St George's in 1828 and was one of the original bell ringers. The bells, made famous in James Joyce's Ulysses, were a familiar sound on the northside of Dublin for many years until the closure of St George's Church in 1990. Now it is hoped that they will ring again to mark the beginning of the new millennium and training is already under way to ensure that ringing teams will be ready.

Those who wish to support this project, either by making a financial contribution, or by agreeing to sponsor a bell should contact the Rector of Taney, Canon Desmond Sinnamon (01-298 5491) or Mrs Vivien Hood (01-298 6367).
