Prayers for the Millennium
The imminence of the impending millennium has conjured up a variety
of responses in the Church of Ireland. Some are dismissive of the event
seeing in it little or no Christian context, others wish to eagerly
embrace it as an opportunity to re-state the timelessness of the
Christian message, while the majority seem bewildered at the apparent
absence of any policy, leadership or direction. No doubt as the
millennium draws closer a sense of urgency may emerge from the councils
of the Church but in the meantime there are those who are not prepared
to wait.
One such is Mrs Norma McMaster from Skerries who is compiling a book
of prayers for the millennium and is inviting members of the Church of
Ireland to send prayers for inclusion in her book. These should be
original prayers written by clergy or laity throughout the country. She
hopes to produce a volume which will reflect the Church of Ireland at
prayer at the end of the first millennium and at the beginning of the
second. Further details may be had from Mrs Norma McMaster, 63 Church
Street, Skerries, Co. Dublin (tel:: 01-8491387).
This evening (Saturday) there will be an Evening of Music in Kill o'
the Grange parish church, Co. Dublin in aid of the roof fund. The
recitalists will be Peter Sweeney (organ) and Killyan Bannister and
Thomas Rainer (trumpets).
Tomorrow (Sunday) the season of Christmas will be brought to a close
in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin with a Candelmas Eucharist and
Procession which begins at 5.00 pm. The Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin
Eames, will re-dedicate Brantry Parish Church while the Archbishop of
Dublin, Dr Walton Empey, will preach and celebrate the Eucharist in the
Church of St Mary the Virgin, Caldicot, in North Wales. In the Chapel of
Trinity College, Dublin the preacher will be the Archdeacon of Down, the
Ven. Gregor McCamley, who is closely involved in the Church of Ireland's
current reflection on sectarianism.
The second in the Adelaide Hospital Society's series of lectures on
medical ethics will be held in the new hospital in Tallaght on Monday
evening at 8 00 pm. The speaker will be Professor Walter Prendiville, a
consultant gynaecologist in the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, who will
consider "Ethical Issues in Women's Health"
A somewhat different type of lecture will be delivered in Christ
Church Cathedral, Dublin at lunchtime on Tuesday when Mr Douglas Bennett
will speak about "The Cathedral Plate & the Artistic Influence
of William and Mary". Mr Bennett is Secretary of the Company of
Goldsmiths and an accomplished writer and lecturer on many aspects of
his native city of Dublin.
On Thursday, in the context of Evensong in the Chapel of Trinity
College, Dublin, a new CD by David Adams, Director of Music in the
College chapel, will be launched. Entitled "Organ" the CD
contains recordings of all the Trinity College organs. Visitors will be
welcome to this special Evensong.
On Friday evening the Representative Church Body Library in
Churchtown will remain open until 7.30 pm.
The Diocese of Armagh has announced the appointment of a new Diocesan
Secretary in succession to Mr Richard McConnell who retires this month.
Mrs Jane Montgomery, a parishioner of Benburb, who has been Mr
McConnell's assistant for the past twelve years will succeed to the
post.
An interdenominational pilgrimage to the Holy Land is planned for the
autumn under the leadership of Canon Billy Beare, Rector of Stradbally,
and the Revd Robert Dunlop, Baptist Minister in Brannockstown. There
will be places for some thirty pilgrims who will visit the major Jewish
and Christian sites from 11 to 20 November. Details may be had from
Canon Beare (0502-25173) or Pastor Dunlop (045-483629).
